NEW SMYNRA BEACH, Fla. — A K-9 with a Florida sheriff’s department made his first takedown of a “violent fugitive” wanted on several felony warrants, including carjacking and murder, authorities said Friday. Deputies attempted to arrest Bacon on Thursday after he was recently observed buying a 60-round AK-47 magazine in New Smyrna Beach, the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. K-9 Red “quickly tracked Bacon to his hiding spot,” the sheriff’s office said. Bacon was taken into custody and treated for a bite injury at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. Second arrest made in beating outside DeLand barbershop
DeLAND, Fla. – Another man has been arrested months after a barber with disabilities was beaten and robbed outside the shop where he worked, according to the DeLand Police Department. The Dec. 13, 2020 attack was caught on video, which showed two men approach the victim outside First Class Barber Shop on New York Avenue. As the victim was on the ground, Malik Sanchez ran over and stole his car keys, according to the report. Christopher Vest works with the victim and said he saw the attack happen. 22-year-old arrested in fight that injured Stetson University student
A Stetson University medallion was stolen from campus and officers with the DeLand Police Department are asking for help from the public to find it. DeLAND, Fla. – A 22-year-old man was arrested late Friday in connection with an incident that left a Stetson University student injured, authorities said. DeLand police said Monday that George Tsiouklas was arrested in Pinellas County on a charge of felony battery. Information about the victim, who was hospitalized, has not been released. According to Stetson’s athletics website, Tsiouklas is from Palm Harbor and played football at Stetson from 2016-19.

Police said an argument broke out at the Athens Commons housing complex just after 2 a.m., which led to a male student being injured. Police said the suspect is believed to be a former Stetson football player and student who fled before police arrived. The investigation is ongoing.
DeLand man was speeding before crash that killed passenger, police say
DeLAND, Fla. – A man who was driving nearly three times the speed limit before a crash that killed one of his passengers last year has been arrested, according to the DeLand Police Department. AdThat passenger also admitted that he felt “unsafe and nervous” before the crash, according to the affidavit. Records show investigators pulled a crash data retrieval system from the car and determined Caron was driving 95.6 mph five seconds before the crash and 71.4 mph at impact. The speed limit is 35 mph but the recommended speed in the area is 25 mph. After police said DNA tests verified Caron was driving at the time, he was arrested Tuesday on a charge of vehicular homicide.

Authorities asked the male if it was about the stolen medallion and he said it was. The caller said the medallion had been placed in a dirt parking lot across from the Stetson University Facilities building, according to a news release.

Man arrested in love triangle shooting in DeLand, police say
DeLAND, Fla. – A man was arrested not long after he shot at his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend as a result of an ongoing feud between the two men, according to the DeLand Police Department. Police said the shooting happened shortly after 10 a.m. Thursday on Franklin Avenue. Records show the victim, who was not injured, was cooperative and was able to help officers identify 29-year-old Daniel Troutman as a suspect. The men argued until Troutman pulled a gun out of the car and fired two shots toward the victim, records show. Troutman claimed the victim has been harassing, threatening and following him and his girlfriend because of their relationship.

Student lied about shooting threat at DeLand High, police say
DeLAND, Fla. – A student who reported a shooting threat that caused a lockdown at DeLand High School on Thursday lied about overhearing the violent comment, according to the DeLand Police Department. Around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, police said they determined that the 17-year-old boy who reported the threat made up the story to get out of school. DeLand High School is on lockdown as a precaution. DeLand High lockdown has been lifted. No gun was found and that lockdown was lifted about 30 minutes later, according to police.
Driver killed in DeLand crash after hitting tree
DeLand, Fla. – The DeLand Police Department said Gabrielle Burns, 21, is dead after a fatal crash in the area of East Taylor Road around 1:58 a.m. Saturday. Authorities said the preliminary investigation shows a blue Acura was driving east on East Taylor Road approaching Martin Luther King Jr. Beltway when Burns left the road for an unknown reason. After leaving the road the car struck a tree at the entrance of Victoria Gardens. Burns was pronounced deceased at the scene by EVAC, officials said.

Arrest made years after woman was set on fire in DeLand
DeLAND, Fla. - Two years after a woman was intentionally set on fire, her attacker has been arrested, according to the DeLand Police Department. Officials said Tracy Adams, 39, was set ablaze outside her home in DeLand in August 2017. Her daughter called 911 when Adams ran inside the home bleeding and screaming that someone was trying to kill her. DeLand city spokesman Chris Graham said Adams was in a vehicle when it was set on fire. Family members said Friday that Bernard Thomas was arrested in Brevard County in connection with the attack.
Woman found dead inside home in DeLand
DELAND, Fla. - The DeLand Police Department said a woman was found dead inside a home in the 800 block of North Arlington Avenue Thursday night. A CSI Unit responded to the scene, according to News 6 reporter Troy Campbell. A section of North Arlington Avenue has been closed off. Police said it appears she had been dead for more than 24 hours when officers got to the scene. Investigators said when officers arrived to the scene they found an older man still alive, but he may have been intoxicated at the home.
Tires slashed on 2 DeLand patrol cars
DELAND, Fla. - The tires of two DeLand patrol cars were slashed, according to the DeLand Police Department. Police said four other cars had their tires slashed. Investigators said the cars were parked in the DeLand Police Department auxiliary lot across from the main department building. Authorities said the tires were slashed over the night of Aug. 1. Officers said anyone with information about similar incidents or this case is asked to call police at 386-626-7426.
Child rescued from bug-infested SUV was at risk of drug exposure, police say
ORLANDO, Fla. - Two parents were arrested after officers rescued their 2-year-old child from a filthy vehicle containing drugs and an infestation of insects, according to the DeLand Police Department. Authorities noticed a vehicle Tuesday with its engine off stationed in a small park, where the temperature was 104 degrees. Five empty syringe cases, a green fabric arm band, plastic straws containing a white powdery residue, a glass pipe with cannabis residue and a plastic bag containing syringe caps were found in Wilson's purse, the report said. An open wound on the child's neck had drawn small insects, but did not require medical treatment, according to DeLand Fire Department Personnel. Both parents were arrested on charges of possession of paraphernalia, possession of a Schedule II substance and child neglect.
Police arrest 2nd suspect in Candlelight Oaks shooting
The second of two suspects wanted in an attempted murder case in DeLands Candlelight Oaks neighborhood was arrested Monday, officials said. Outside the home, two of the men in the group pulled out handguns and started shooting at Chambers, police said. According to an arrest report, Chambers said he didn't know why Bruten and his accomplices would shoot him, except to rob him. Police said that hours before the shooting, Chambers had posted a photo of himself on Instagram showing off his new clothes, his middle finger extended and large amounts of cash sticking out of his front pocket.
