ORLANDO, Fla. – News 6 has told countless stories of workers who were either furloughed or laid off due to the coronavirus pandemic and are now trying to make ends meet. Now, some of those workers are getting ready to get back into the workforce thanks to the CARES Act Blueprint 2.0 job training program started by the city of Orlando in partnership with Orange County. More than 50 students are graduating from the program Wednesday and all of them were adversely affected by COVID-19. “I never [experienced] anything like that before, and it was to the point where in my mind I didn’t know what to do,” said Clint Cuyler, a graduate of the job training program. The students gained specialized training and even got a stipend over the weekslong program.

Jessie Chapman, Orlando area commander for The Salvation Army, said the training process this year for distribution day wasn’t an easy feat. This year has been a really, really hard year,” said a woman named Edith.

The world’s largest free-standing White Castle will be breaking ground in Orlando on Nov. 19. “There’s no other place that we wanted to be other than Orlando,” White Castle spokesperson Jamie Richardson told News 6 last November. According to White Castle officials, there will be indoor and outdoor seating and two drive-thru lanes. This White Castle location will bring 120 new jobs to the area, the company said in a news release. While we don’t know exactly when the White Castle will open, breaking ground is a great step toward bringing Central Floridians the food they crave.

DeSantis' order on certain real estate evictions lifts Thursday, meaning more people could potentially face homelessness. At the moment, the coalition is taking in individual volunteers but not group volunteers.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orange County residents who have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic are urged to contact CareerSource Central Florida for help getting work placement, job training or a paid internship. CareerSource was awarded $7 million in federal CARES Act money to help struggling Central Floridians get back on their feet. Pam Nabors, the president and CEO of CareerSource Central Florida, said the local unemployment rate remains at 16% even as many businesses have reopened. And so it’s very important that Orange County knows that help is here through the Orange County CARES Act grant,” Nabors said. We just this past week put 21 individuals, out-of-work performers to work at Central Florida Community Arts doing stage production, doing tutoring, doing classroom assistance, educational assistance.

CNS Healthcare plans to conduct clinical trials in Orlando, according to its website, and is currently seeking participants. Prospective participants can also indicate whether theyre interested in vaccine trials, medication trials or both. Identification of interested volunteers is crucial in speeding up enrollment in the trials that will provide answers and solutions, the website reads. Fauci said recently that hes hopeful a vaccine could be available later this year or early next year.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Heart of Florida United Way CEO Jeff Hayword said the COVID-19 pandemic continues to have economic consequences for Central Floridians. On Wednesday, he held a meeting with local leaders to discuss what he calls a housing crisis in the community. From March 17, 2019, to June 17, 2019, there were over 2,300 residential eviction cases filed in Orange County. In the same period of 2020, there have been less than 300 residential eviction cases filed. Tiffany Moore Russell, with the Orange County Clerk of Courts, said July though October is typically when they see a high peak in evictions.

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. Several Central Floridians have been lucky lately winning big prizes on scratch-off games. Ramzi Abdullah, 45, won the $1 million prize on the $5,000,000 Luck Scratch-off game, Florida Lottery officials announced.
