Arrest made in fatal shooting at Derbyshire Park basketball court
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The suspect accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old man as he was playing basketball at Derbyshire Park last month has been taken into custody, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Records show the victim, John Phillips, was playing basketball at the park when Turner approached, fired multiple shots at him then ran away. Multiple witnesses said they were playing basketball with Phillips when Turner and another person arrived at the park. The witness said Turner and the other person walked up to the victim and Turner shot him. The witness who was walking with Turner said they went for a walk and Turner followed to the basketball court.
Shootings in Daytona Beach up 76% from last year
Community members in Daytona Beach spoke to the police chief on Monday evening to address recent gun violence. Police Chief Jakari Young said that he needs members of the community to help keep the city safe as well. “Now you got a chief that’s calling the community because I need your help,” Chief Young told the crowd during the meeting. Chief Young also said that shootings in Daytona Beach are up 76% from this time last year. Chief Young said all of his officers are now required to walk the streets and build community relationships for 30 minutes of each of their 12-hour shifts.
Argument over woman may have led to fatal shooting at Daytona Beach park, police say
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A 19-year-old man was killed Sunday in a shooting on a basketball court in Daytona Beach, police said. The fatal shooting was reported around 3:19 p.m. at Derbyshire Park. The shooting may have stemmed from an argument over a woman, Young said. Young said there will be a community meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Midtown Cultural Center to address the spree of shootings in the community lately. “(Police) can’t be everywhere all the time.”Officers described the shooting at Derbyshire Park as an isolated incident that was not connected to other recent shootings.
