Bike Week 2021: Daytona Beach police responded to 5 fatal crashes, made 135 arrests
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. โ During the 10 days of Bike Week 2021 Daytona Beach police were busy responding to crashes and issuing hundreds of citations in the area around the annual motorcycle event, statistics from the Daytona Beach Police Department show. During that time officers issued 330 traffic citations, of those 157 were for motorcycle riders. Officers issued 28 DUI citations during the 10-day period. Of the 135 arrests made, 49 arrests were for noise complaints, 19 were for disorderly conduct while driving under the influence and open container also made up some of the arrests. Halifax Hospital previously reported it saw 91 admissions tied to the event, an increase from 62 admissions during Bike Week over the past four years.
Video shows driver intentionally running over, killing pedestrian in Daytona Beach, police say
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ New video shows a man hitting the gas and intentionally driving his car onto the sidewalk, fatally striking a pedestrian who was sitting near the intersection, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Police said surveillance video at West International Speedway Boulevard and Nova Road captured the crash shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday. The video also shows the driver jumping out of the moving vehicle seconds before it hit Watson, a pole and what appears to be an electrical box. News 6 is only airing an edited version of the video that stops before the fatal impact. According to the affidavit, Adum had circled the intersection prior to the crash but had to slow down because of another vehicle.
Daytona Beach crash victim dies days after being rescued from pond

New Smyrna Beach police said Shane Jackson, 50, along with the victim and several others were asked to leave Tayton OโBrians at 410 Flagler Ave. Wednesday around 11 p.m. When the arresting officers learned of Jacksonโs employment, Daytona Beach Police Department was notified of his arrest. โEarlier today, I released a brief statement in reference to the early morning arrest of Daytona Beach Police Officer Shane Jackson. Shane Jackson has been terminated from employment with the Daytona Beach Police Department effective immediately.
Woman dies in fire truck crash in Daytona Beach
A 52-year-old Ormond Beach woman died and five City of Daytona Beach fire fighters were hurt following a traffic crash near Halifax Health Medical Center on Saturday. Just after 5 p.m., a Daytona Beach Fire Department truck flipped over after a collision with a silver Pontiac driven by the woman, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Man shot in arm at Daytona Beach apartment complex, police say

The victim heard a noise around 10 p.m. and when he went to investigate, police said he was shot by a man who was standing on the exterior stairs. Yes, Iโm the first female deputy chief, I worked very hard to get here and Iโm proud of where Iโm at but I think this agency and this community has so much to offer past me,โ she said. Wanting a bit more sunshine, she joined the Daytona Beach Police Department as a patrol officer. She then worked her way up sergeant, then lieutenant, and in November, she was promoted to deputy chief by the recently appointed Chief Jakari young. โWe had to hit the ground running and I needed a solid deputy chief to catch my back and do what needed to be done,โ he said.

35-year-old woman fatally struck while crossing street in Daytona Beach
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ A 35-year-old woman was fatally struck while walking across U.S. 1 Tuesday night, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. She was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center, where she died shortly after her arrival.
Arrest made in fatal shooting at Derbyshire Park basketball court
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ The suspect accused of fatally shooting a 19-year-old man as he was playing basketball at Derbyshire Park last month has been taken into custody, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Records show the victim, John Phillips, was playing basketball at the park when Turner approached, fired multiple shots at him then ran away. Multiple witnesses said they were playing basketball with Phillips when Turner and another person arrived at the park. The witness said Turner and the other person walked up to the victim and Turner shot him. The witness who was walking with Turner said they went for a walk and Turner followed to the basketball court.
Man shot by Daytona Beach police charged at officers, body camera video shows
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ Hours after a man was shot and injured by Daytona Beach police Thursday night, the department released body camera video of the encounter showing he continued to move forward at officers as they told him to get on the ground. According to the body camera video, Mansilla was shot in the neck area behind his left ear. Mansillaโs fiance Hunter Harrison told News 6 he was the other person in the parking lot when the shooting happened. Daytona Beach police previously arrested Mansilla in November at the Daytona International Speedway. When confronted by security, Mansilla pulled out two large knives and began running at the security officers, according to the report.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ A 19-year-old man was killed Sunday in a shooting on a basketball court in Daytona Beach, police said. The fatal shooting was reported around 3:19 p.m. at Derbyshire Park. The shooting may have stemmed from an argument over a woman, Young said. Two male relatives were engaged in an argument inside the residence that lead to one shot being fired, striking and killing the victim. Man fatally shot during large fight in Daytona Beach, police say
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. โ A man was fatally shot during a large fight Saturday morning and now authorities are asking any additional witnesses to step forward, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department. Records show the fight and shooting happened in 800 block of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Boulevard around 11:30 a.m., killing Chad Givens. Jalen Foster and Corey Favors (Volusia County Jail)The driver, 27-year-old Corey Favors, 22-year-old Foster and another passenger were detained. Police said they believe Foster, Favors and the third passenger in the Kia were at the fight where Givens was fatally shot. A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information about the shooting that killed Givens.
Daytona Beach swears in new police chief
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ It was an emotional day for the 17th Daytona Beach Police Chief, Jakari Young is the cityโs first black police chief. Young, 42, was sworn in as the new police chief on Friday morning. Young replaced former police chief Craig Capri whoโs leaving after a 30-year career in law enforcement. For the last 19 years, Young climbed the ranks at the Daytona Beach Police Department and served the last three years as Deputy Chief. โYou have a police chief who wants to do nothing more than to be a blessing to this city,โ said Young.
Daytona Beach police offer $10,000 reward for information leading to 2007 cold case murder
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ The Daytona Beach Police Department is offering a $10,000 reward for information regarding the 2007 slaying of an 18-year-old woman in hopes it will bring in new clues to the cold case. Mamie Jameka Thomas was found dead on Oct. 21, 2007 in a vacant lot near 618 South Beach Street, across the street from the Halifax Harbor Marina. Her body was showing advanced signs of decomposition and it took months to successfully identify Thomas, authorities said. Daytona Beach police held a news conference Wednesday to announce the reward and ask the public for their help solving this case. Daytona Beach police investigating jury duty scam using deputyโs name to target senior citizens
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. โ The Daytona Beach Police Department is asking the publicโs help to find the suspects who they said are using a Volusia County deputyโs name to swindle senior citizens out of money in a jury duty fraud scheme. A 73-year-old Port Orange woman told News 6 she lost $3,200 last month after she believed she had to pay fines for missing jury duty. She then agreed to meet 33-year-old Pierra Terrell outside Jones Bail Bonds on Adams Street and handed over the cash. The police department invited the real Brian Henderson who is the Division Chief for the Volusia County Sheriffโs Office to explain how jury duty works.
